NJB is short for Nicolaas Johannes Basson, the owner of the estate as well as his late father. The wine is named in remembrance of his father, because he saw potential that few others in the Darling area saw before him – becoming one of the first to plant olive trees and vineyards on the Darling Hills.
There is about 200 Ha of dryland vineyards of which the majority of grapes is sold to other award winning labels.
Today, this legacy is carried forward by his son, a next generation Nicolaas Johannes Basson, who not only shares his father’s name but also his passion for the area, produce and of course family.
We call our Sauvignon Blanc the Blou Pypie. Gladiolus carinatus, more commonly known as “blou pypie”, is a flower that holds a special place in our hearts – and our logo as a result. Being endemic to our area, the “blou pypie” was found on our family’s original farm and also grows on Alexanderfontein where Darling Olives and Darling Romery started. As such, it is something we grew up with and consider as a central part of our identity as a business and family.
By nature, the “blou pypie” tends to grow alone, which to us symbolises our family’s history of not simply following trends, but rather trying something different. This perfectly describes our 2018 Sauvignon Blanc. It definitely is something different – with hints of floral this is a mouthwatering easy drinking wine, delightful enough to share but precious enough to want to savour all by yourself.
